‘Should Have Slept on It’ Thoughts: The Terrible day that was

I have some bad news, that Memphis upset was the exception, not the rule. Umass went up against a below average Davidson team and played terribly, losing by 2 in a game that should have never gotten away from them. In the end, the team shot 36% for the game and (arrrrrg) 18% from behind the line.

In typical Umass basketball fashion, the team feel behind by 9 in the second half after leading at the half, and was lucky to even get the game in reach.

I think it may be the last straw with this team. I desperately wanted to be one of the few students following the basketball team closely, and actually believing in this young team, but absolutely nothing is there. This team, with the exception of the Memphis game, folds in the second half of every game that is close, and constantly plays the the (lower) level of their opponent.

Anthony Gurley, quickly becoming a better version of Ricky Harris, was the sole bright spot for the Minutemen, scoring 17 on 50% shooting and grabbing 7 rebounds. Terrell Vinson took Ricky’s lead and decided to take atrocious 3′s, going 1-5 with Ricky going 2-7. Also, Ricky took 23 shots. and he was having a shitty shooting night. God I hate this team. Its terrible for my health.

On the hockey front, we were able to take a nice win over Union and roll it into a 4-1 shit sandwich against Bentley. Yes, I understand Rank played out of his mind, but getting one goal on 43 shots is not going to get the job done, and we deserve some of the blame.

I know its not the end of the world, and at least this wasn’t against a hockey east team, but the fear is in the back of my head that we will let a bad Hockey East team beat us in a game that will end our season later on. Playing down to opponents in this league is dangerous, especially when we could draw a potentially dangerous underachiever during the Hockey east quarterfinals.

I still think we can easily take 3 of the next four, with a sweep in things go good (no epic Goalie performances hopefully).

In other news, our Women’s basketball team lost. Frankly, I would trade a decade of their wins for a Basketball or Hockey victory tonight. Sorry ladies, but some things take precedence.

This Week In Vast Overreaction: Ballad Of A Thin Man

“and if your pissed off ’cause you think that I dissed you I rape your moms and we can make this a personal issue”

I’ll admit it, if I wrote this post yesterday, when I first heard about our sister school’s hockey blog post attacking the founder of Fight Mass, I would have been far more knee jerk and, frankly, profane. When I read their extremely wordy half attack half rebuttal post, I first off wanted to tell them to go fuck themselves (sorry for the dirty language RHHB, sad a blog that can shit talk everyone can’t deal with a dirty word) and secondly I wanted to call them out on half-assed swipe at our fine school (I’m fairly sure we are far ahead ULowell academically, for someone who wishes to reference Debate 101 obviously didn’t take logic. Obviously a school with double the student population would be funded more. Anything different would be socialist, and I would hate to label such a “pork barrel spending” hater like you as socialist).

However, the more I thought about it, the sadder and more indicative it is of their psyche. An insecure, bitter old guy who writes about sports involving underage youth takes a lighthearted swipe by a college writer on a week old blog as an attack on him. Typical reaction from a blogger who is out of touch from the fan base he supposedly represents. The UmassLowell fans I know (and I do know alot, given I’m from Medford) are able to take a joke, give a joke back and not revert to entirely condescending tones. As Max said in a previous post, RHHB is not the embodiment of true ULowell fans, he is only a voice for the post-graduate fans who take everything a bit too seriously. When Max and I graduate, which won’t be long away, he is a senior, we will continue to be fans. However, with a step into maturity, there would be a step back from grade school tactics on a hockey blog (thankfully I have 2 years to do this).

I’m not saying Max’s opinions were about retort. However RHHB’s response  exceeded  far a reasonable response, quickly turning into an attack post. While I will say that a good amount of space was given to the rebuttal of hockey related issues (issues that I feel Max or Derek or far more qualified to respond to) much of the post was a full on attack of Max’s unimaginative name for the blog (this coming from the uniquely generic “Ice is Life”  blog, hey assholes at least our name refers to the team) Bands he likes (sadly Pitchfork ain’t hiring guys) and even name.

By the end of his post, he comes to the conclusion that Max’s comments on Lowell hockey were some veiled attempt at getting their blog to mention him (this coming from someone who called Max’s name pompous). The evidence? The fact that Max gave props to them as an influence for the blog. Yup, that was the evidence. He then proceeds to refer to Max as Baby Max (of course, a 22 year old is a baby when college life is only a distant memory) At the end he refuses to link or further discuss our blog (which didn’t stop him from trolling and leaving an asshole comment on our banner announcement)

The saddest part of this is that RHHB is so self interested and delusional that he couldn’t see the mutual aspects of both blogs. Rather than respecting the fact that Max obviously enjoys the writing of his site and rebut the point in a cool way, he became “blow things out of proportion guy” and decided to launch a personal attack on Max. At the end of the day, both Max and old man RHHB both are die hard fans of the niche sport of college hockey. School pride is what makes the sport great and its sad that one bad apple had to start lobbing grenades. At the end of the day, both Max and RHHB are writing for free on non revenue gathering sites, neither matters in the long run, its all for fun.

PS, RHBB’s mother is a cunt

Love,

-Matthew John Crispin Civello

(full disclosure, i’ve been talking shit to him on my twitter page)

(lastly, I know “Ice is Life” is a Keruoac reference, its still fucking dumb. Fight Mass is obvious and clear, Ice is Life sounds like something you would put on a generic sweatshirt for a 6 year old. Also, kinda funny you claim the guy who wrote on the road, its like having Born to Run be your anthem. Congrats, you are the New Jersey of Massachusetts.

Kneejerk reactions: 12/29 vs. Union

Personally, the UMass version of the Cardiac Kids is taking its toll on my heart this year, but a win is a win is a win. Especially when that win comes against a Union team that came into the game ranked 18th in the nation (and, far more importantly, 14th in the PWR rankings – tied with Yale and above Cornell, Maine, Vermont and Lowell) and which hadn’t lost since before Halloween.

Paul Dainton stood on his head in this one, and we needed it, because the Minutemen came out completely flat in the first two periods (save for a quick spurt in the middle of the second). Ortiz’s latest dumb penalty certainly didn’t help matters when he went off for 5 minutes for hitting the goalie from behind late in the 1st, but he played his ass off to redeem himself later on in the game, including the tying goal early in the 3rd. I also don’t like Toot taking the foot off the gas with what Hennessey and Hines referred to as a “passive forecheck” in the closing minutes, as it led to an extremely anxious final minute in which Dainton basically won the game for us. It was shades of Quinnipiac all over again.

Another concern for me were the lack of production outside the top line, something I thought was coming around with Ortiz’s good stretch to end the first semester, and he did contribute one of the four goals. But that’s still 75% of our offense generated by one line. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with having one of college hockey’s best lines (I like that a helluva lot more than Watson playing with Casey and Jimmy), but it would be great to take some of scoring pressure off of them. Hopefully Ortiz can continue to sizzle and Hobbs can get going again like he was early in the year.

But here’s the bottom line: this was a victory. UMass basically only showed up for one period, but fortunately, Dainton and the defense (and especially the PK) kept it close, and the offense found their rhythm at the end. I’d prefer a more complete effort like the game against Merrimack, but considering Union is a ranked (and likely underrated) squad and you never know what to expect coming off a two-week-plus layoff, you have to be happy with the outcome. Tomorrow’s still basically a must-win as far as getting a non-automatic tourney big is concerned, but hopefully the cobwebs have been shaken off and the boys don’t look past their foe, be it underachieving Bentley or an awful UConn team that would have the energy and momentum of an upset win over said Bentley team.

David Boehm’s also going to miss this tournament for undisclosed disciplinary reasons. Between injuries and disciplinary issues, it’s frustrating to see him sidelined, because he’s shown a lot of promise when he’s been able to contribute. Here’s hoping  he bounces back quickly.

Tomorrow night will be a busy night for UMass, with hockey playing the championship game (EDIT: yep, predictably, it’s Bentley. Good, UConn would’ve killed our PWR even in the likely event that we won) and basketball visiting Davidson. I probably won’t be around to give my immediate reactions this time, but I’ll write about those games at some point. In the meantime, enjoy what’s left of 2009. The Winter Classic is just around the bend!

*facepalm*

It’s come to my attention that a certain Lowell blog recently wasted several hours writing a dissertation about, well, me. I’m not personally going to respond to its direct claims at the moment cause, quite honestly, I haven’t read it yet. I’m going to try and not read it until the 14th, where it’ll serve as amusing pre-game material for Lowell vs. UMass (Matt suggested “drink for every contrived argument” but added “wait, I don’t want to die”). I’ll probably respond to it then, in my writeup of the game.

It’s certainly adorable to see full-grown adults writing personal attack pieces, and I’m amused that my little rant got such a wild overreaction, but I’ve done some thinking lately and realized that I don’t have as much against Lowell as a whole as I thought. The people I know personally who go to the school are, for the most part, quality people. Furthermore, let’s be honest here, it’s a few (admittedly rather vocal) apples on a blog and some message boards who are skewing my perception of Lowell’s fan base. The ones I know personally (who actually attended the school recently or currently) have a more humble opinion of their program. After all, they have one freakin’ D1 program in the whole school, who am I to deprive them of their fun? Hell, I would have outright rooted for Lowell last year had they been playing anyone other than BU.

Based on Matt’s reaction to the attack thesis (his thoughts are forthcoming), I have a feeling that, in a few weeks when I do read it, I’m gonna be a lot less amicable about the subject. But for now, I’ll just say thanks for the extra site traffic (likely an extra 4-5 visitors!) and good luck to your team the rest of the way. And now, back to your regularly scheduled hockey blog.

New banner, layout, etc.

Self-explanatory I think. As the picture says, the credit for the original photo goes to Brian Long. It’s taken from the BC game this year (and let us never point to that fact again) and the writers of this blog all in it, somewhere. Lemme know whatcha think.

Since this post is technically coming on Monday, that means UMass vs. Union is TOMORROW. Now that the groundwork for the blog has been laid (and, apparently, the feathers of “disrespect” already ruffled), I must say, it’ll be fun to actually have some hockey to talk about and overreact to for a change. Wednesday will be double the fun, with hockey (knock on wood!) in the UConn Classic finals and basketball visiting Stephen Curry’s old team in Davidson.

As always, go UMass!

Oh please.

Oh, would you look at that, Lowell made NCAA tournaments in ’88, ’94, AND ’96! They’ve actually won a grand total of ONE more tournament game than we have. My fucking bad, I had no idea they had such a rich and prestigious history. Why, they’re practically the Notre Dame of ice hockey!

My point remains valid, kids.

Season blow-by-blow

Merry Christmas, everyone! (Don’t complain to me about political correctness. It’s Christmas. I’m not even religious. It’s basically a secular holiday now anyway. Get over it.)

Alright, so the other night’s loss to the Superfrauds, where, according to everything I hear, it was as predicted a pro-UMass crowd, puts the boys back in their place a little bit. However, they did have an awful shooting performance, like, beyond-awful; embarassing. And the aforementioned STUD Terrell Vinson was in foul trouble (I think) and didn’t play most of the game. So there’s that.

I still think the boys can bounce back. They’re 1-1 on this three-game trip, though I figured the two outcomes would be reversed. Let’s see how they respond at Davidson and we’ll have an idea of where they’re at as A-10 play begins.

ANYWAY…with this little basketball interlude out of the way, it’s time to get back to the ice, my focus on the game having been renewed by the Bruins’ 6-4 win against Atlanta that I had the pleasure of witnessing a few hours ago. The UConn tournament is fast approaching, but before it does, it’s time for some 20-20 hindsight analysis of the road they’ve traveled thus far.

10/3 vs. New Brunswick (exhibition)

Never happened.

(No, seriously, we all thought the team was doomed after that painful experience of a preseason hockey game. Definitely woke them up a bit methinks. Maybe a blessing in disguise. Still embarassing.)

10/8 vs. RPI

A 5-2 win for our boys which felt a lot more excruciating, mostly because of what happened five days prior. Irwin’s two goals seem like a distant memory now, but Jimmy’s four assists were just the opening act of a masterful first-half performance. The slow start to this game was worrisome, as was getting outshot by the Engineers; conversely, the team showed it could grind out ugly wins.

10/16 vs. BU

Kinda funny how beating the #2 team in the country and the defending national champs is now our least impressive win, but the truth is, the 3-2 score didn’t even really reflect how badly we outplayed the Terriers. I called this one for WMUA and I remember how many close calls there were, and it’s fortunate, because Chiasson damn near won this game by himself for BU in his first collegiate game.  It’s funny how completely the tables have turned as these teams get set to meet on Comm Ave on Jan. 2nd, and hopefully, BU doesn’t return the favor.

10/23 vs. Maine

Two words: ug-ly. After Adam SHE-MANsky’s Oscar-worthy performance, sustaining what looked like a season- (and perhaps career-) ending injury on what was admittedly a cheap shot by Nolet, and settting off a slugfest. It’s funny that the guy was completely fine and played in the next game. Then again, what do you expect from Maine?

Anyway, in spite of Maine using “defending their ‘fallen’ teammate” as an excuse to take cheap shots at our guys the rest of the game, UMass prevailed 5-3, and we saw Mikey break out offensively, scoring his first collegiate goal on a beautiful feed from his brother. It didn’t look like much at the time, but now that we’re looking up at Maine in the standings (though, with games in hand, we could pass them), this becomes a standout win. I’m not sold on the Black Bears yet, though, not if their game is goon hockey.

Shemansky is lucky the remaining two games are up in the middle of nowhere, because he’s never going to stop hearing it from UMass fans after that one. (Then again, he’s no Dave Wilson.) But I still circle those two games as somehow being “revenge games” for Maine, as if that acting job was a noble cause to avenge.

10/30 at PC, 10/31 vs. PC

Mixed bag here. The 5-3 win at Schneider was a sign of what I think differentiates this team from the one we’ve seen the last few years – instead of falling apart when things went south, the boys rallied in the third period and took over the game down the stretch. I know, the Friars aren’t exactly world-beaters, but the Minutemen have had a reputation for playing to the competition and I think they shook that off with this game. Halloween sucked, but let’s be frank, nobody was going to beat Alex Beaudry that night. He’s the one goalie in Hockey East this year who can single-handedly steal a game like this. To be fair, UMass didn’t exactly come out gangbusters right away, but the extent to which they dominated the 3rd period (we outshot PC 21-0. That’s not a typo. TWENTY ONE TO ZERO) would have been enough to overcome a greater deficit than 2-0 on most nights. Not this one. Sucks when this kinda game happens in league play, but that’s life.

11/06 vs. Niagara, 11/08 at Niagara

A 4-1 home win and a 4-2 road win in one weekend, where again, the boys started slow and finished strong. Honestly, I prefer that to the “score early and pray that Dainton and the D can make it stand” strategy of the last couple years. Meyers finally got a start and looked (well, sounded) good in the road game. Niagara came in a snakebitten team and they certainly haven’t gotten much better since (they’re 51st out of 58 in the KRACH rankings), so these aren’t really resume-building games, but wins are wins.

11/13 and 11/14 vs. UNH

Figures that I got to call the second game for WMUA, right? Funny thing is, UMass got outplayed (perhaps as badly as they have all season) in the first game and still pulled out a win, then controlled play for most of the second game and managed to lose. Hate to bring out the old excuses, but as they’ve discussed to death over on the UMassHoops forums, the ice SUCKS at the Mullins Center when it’s warm, as it was for this weekend series. You could say that we got the appropriate outcome from the series, but we’re really lucky that Wellman knocked home that equalizer (and that Foster fell asleep on Boehm’s game-winner). That said, this looked like a bad weekend for UMass against a supposedly mediocre Wildcats team, but 1-1 against these guys doesn’t look so bad considering how they’ve done against the rest of Hockey East so far. I fully anticipate a tie when we go to Whittemore next month, because it just seems fitting after those first two games.

And I’m done with Bobby Butler. Done. He was a Blue Devil nemesis when he played for Marlboro High, and he’s absolutely TORCHED the Minutemen for four years. Please graduate, and whatever you do, do not somehow end up on the Montreal Canadiens someday.

11/19 at Yale

Just a huge non-conference road win. Once again the boys rallied in the third period, and I just don’t remember the last two years having ANY confidence in the team being able to make such a comeback. I was working security and in the middle of signing someone in up in Sylvan when Jimmy scored the goal, and I remember not really hearing what happened for a moment, but it was undoubtedly the greatest moment of the season that I wasn’t present for.

11/24 at Vermont

I was one of the few scattered souls at the basketball game vs. St. Francis (NY), and let me tell you, the collective groan when we heard “Vermont 1 UMass 0″ and “Vermont 2 UMass 1″, followed by the outburst when they announced “UMass 4 Vermont 2″ shortly afterward, were the loudest moments of the game. (Not saying much.) I think this game put to bed any notion that Jimmy’s season is a fluke. Vermont is one of those scary places we never seem to win at, and so this was sort of cathartic I think. Plus, Vermont is still #15 in the KRACH, and though I think the Catamounts are gonna have a rough 2nd half if they don’t figure out how to score, right now these two HEA points double as a very nice resume-building road win.

11/28 at Quinnipiac

Ugh. Terrible loss, and avoidable at that. Dan Meyers is an alright backup, but why start him on the road against the hottest team/offense in college hockey? There’s no doubt in my mind the Bobcats are overrated as all hell; they’ve definitely come back to Earth a little since this game and I see them doing more of that in the second half. But even if that’s true, they WERE ranked above us. You start your ace in that case. I know, at least two of those goals would have probably gone in against Paulie. But that’s not how hindsight works. Dainton in goal would almost definitely not have given up that horrendous rebound on the first goal, and the whole complexion of the game would’ve changed. Cahoon agreed after the game that this game was lost in the first period, and who was our goaltender for that period? Exactly.

That said, we still easily could have won this game, if not for a questionable interference call on Braun-co that led to the game-tying 6-on-4 goal. The defensive breakdowns on both that penalty kill and the Wong game-winner cannot be overlooked. The defense has been up-and-down this year, no question, and this was a low. Just painful all-around, especially if QU’s smoke-and-mirrors show falls apart in the second half. At least it wasn’t a league game.

12/4 vs. Boston College

For all the hype and for everything that went into this game – my visitors from home who came up to see the game (my cousin’s first ever UMass game, in fact), the huge crowd, etc; this was probably the most boring game of the year. I walked down to Parking Services that afternoon to pick up some tickets for my sister and her friends, and I remember thinking, “It’s 50 degrees out. I can feel the Mullins ice melting. We’re going to lose.”

Briefly, I thought I would be wrong when Jimmy wrapped around that goal in the opening minutes, but it quickly became apparent that nobody could fucking skate on this ice, and the speed and finesse game UMass relies so heavily upon just does not work on bad ice. Again, it’s been talked to death on UMassHoops, but for those who don’t read it, the Mullins Center has one compressor which it shares with the practice rink (which, for reasons I can’t begin to fathom, has an open-skate/shoot session during UMass hockey games). This is not true about any other rink in Hockey East. As a result, the ice is a huge slushy mess whenever it’s unseasonably warm in Amherst. I swear this is not a conspiracy theory.

Other excuses? What the hell was Watson doing on the top line with Jimmy and Casey? I really hope this decision was more “let’s give Syner just a bit more time recovering from that injury before we stick him on the first line again” but I fear it was Toot trying to overmanage this team. Whatever it was, it didn’t work, and I never want to see it again.

That being said, I really wasn’t all that impressed with BC. UMass was able to get myriad chances, and on another night, they might have gotten a little luckier. Those freshman defenders are pretty good, but again, the game slowed down for them quite a bit. Thankfully, this won’t be a problem for the next two meetings, and since BC has gone from middle-of-the-pack to national championship contenders in a matter of weeks, the two remaining meetings have become that much bigger. The NESN game in February will be massive. Mark my words.

12/5 at Lowell

Warning: Lowell rant forthcoming.

My 22nd birthday was the Monday following this game. Now, the worst thing that happened to me this weekend was Rivers Cuomo getting in a bus accident and getting my birthday Weezer/Motion City Soundtrack concert in Boston cancelled. But this was 2nd – yes, even worse than losing to BC.

Now, last year, it would’ve been different. I liked Lowell, I really did. They were a scrappy bunch of kids that gave BU all it could handle in the HEA championship game (I still rooted for the Terriers, of course, but that’s just personal bias). “UMass Jr.” was an affectionate little name for these guys. It was good to see someone else from the middle of the HEA pack succeed. It gave us hope.

This year, something happened to these guys. They fell in love with themselves. Mostly because, with so many big names in HEA graduating or fleeing to the NHL, everyone looked at the team who had the most coming back. (This involved overlooking UMass, due to their seven graduating seniors; completely ignoring the fact that a bunch of those guys were dead weight at this point, and that all the guys who carried UMass to being a goal away from knocking off Northeastern last year were coming back a year older and wiser.) Certainly, Lowell had a lot coming back as well, but people seemed to conveniently forget that these guys didn’t actually win anything last year. They rode a hot streak into the playoffs, and came one pretty horrible officiating decision short of stealing the Hockey East title.

But the expectations and swagger displayed by their rabid fanbase far overstretch what most people look at as “reasonable,” to the point where not being picked to win Hockey East, something they’ve never ever done, was seen as outrageous disrespect. Umm, okay. Whatever.

What grinds my gears more than anything, though, is this notion that Lowell is somehow a far superior hockey program to UMass. Yes, Lowell has had far more success in the season series. They’ve had our number, in good years and bad. For whatever reason, we don’t match up well with the Loch Monsters (or is it River Hawks? They both sound like AHL teams). But we’ve been to one HEA championship game. They’ve been to two. Neither of us have won it all yet. Meanwhile, we’ve been to the NCAA tournament once, and even pulled an upset in it. They…haven’t. Ever. EDIT: Just kidding, further research shows that they actually have made it on 3 occasions, with a grand total of 2 wins in those trips, making it further in the tournament than UMass exactly zero times. Yeah, yeah, they were a successful D2 program back in the day. Good for them. Doesn’t count.

Look, I’m not trying to say the Minutemen are in the BC-BU-UNH-Maine level of Hockey East prestige. We’re not. At all. But neither is Lowell, not even close. Of late, we’re both middle-of-the-pack teams, with an opportunity to break out of that rut this year. They’re on the same level as we are. Which, I guess, is all you can ask for when you’re Lowell, because that would be the ONLY thing Lowell Community College has that is on the same level as the University of Massachusetts. (That goes back to my hatred for the question “Which one?” but that’s a whole other rant which I’ll get to someday soon.)

Which is why this loss hurts so much more. We had them on the ropes, they lost 3 straight before this game, and proceeded to suffer maybe the worst loss in Hockey East this year (3-2 at home to Princeton, which had been winless on the road) the very next weekend. “Tailspin” doesn’t begin to describe it. We grabbed a 2-0 lead, everything was looking up, and then we blow a long 5-on-3, Ortiz takes a dumb penalty, and it was downhill from there. After we fell down 3-2, there was even hope when Syner found Mikey to tie it up early in the 3rd, but for the first time I think all season, we got badly outplayed in the 3rd period.

Whatever. Lowell desperately needed this win, and it showed. But the battle of the state schools in mid-January will probably be two of the biggest games of the year. A sweep for us would bury their season. A sweep for them would put them right back in it, and we’ll never hear the end of it. I’ll be there for both games so we damn well better win one. I’m still owed a birthday present.

12/12 vs. Merrimack

Ahh. Much better. 4-1 doesn’t even really tell the story; the boys came out guns a-blazin’ in the first two periods and put this one away early. The early-season hype for the Warriors looked pretty silly; these guys didn’t look like a D1 hockey team (save for Da Costa, who is the real deal). But hey, HEA points are HEA points and we’ll take ‘em. Good exclamation point for a dynamite first half for Ortiz, too.

…Phew. So that’s what’s happened so far. The wait ends in just three days. Last few years, we’re used to looking back at the first half as the “glory days” of the season. Not this time.

Marcus Camby minus the Whores

I know the love for UMass football is (deservedly) low, but while you were asleep Vladimir Ducasse is the top O-Line prospect in the NFL draft. Why am I hearing no buzz on campus from this from this?

Its sad to report, but UMass alums in the pros are not as common as we would hope. Right now, we have (disgraced) Marcus Camby in the NBA and a corner back on the Jets, plus former Cardinal Marcell Shipp playing in the USFL. Plus, since this is technically a hockey blog, I think the Kings goalie is a Minuteman.

But come on! Top of his position? Posiible first rounder? This doesn’t happen at Umass! At least without the help of a fucking asscunt

A current Umasser will have a chance to make it in the pros, and I don’t care if he gets drafted by the Seahawks, I better see some of those putrid jerseys on campus.

Even if most of the student body couldn’t muster the energy to see him play, I want mass suport of Vlad. Its about time we had a high profile Minuteman. And while I looooooooove farm science, it would be something on the front page of Umass.edu that would legitimately excite me.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

As we head into tonight’s hopeful spanking of the surprisingly weak Superfrauds (home losses to Rhode Island, Harvard, St Joe’s and (wait for it) Northern Iowa) I think we need to reevaluate our goals.

After watching the first home game against Cornell, i thought this team was absolutely done for. We couldn’t rebound, couldn’t run, and our supposedly genius dribble drive offense looked suspiciously like the patented “dribble at the top of the key until the shot clock gets to 6 and then drive and hope to get bailed out by a foul” used by every mediocre coach in the NBA.

However after seeing the Memphis game and looking at the talent of this team, i think we can be alright, and have something to build on. But if we are building for the months (glass half full) and years (glass half empty) ahead, we need to address the Ricky Harris problem.

Ricky is our only senior and we all love him, but frankly he has hurt this team this year more than his talents have helped. Ricky is a shoot first scorer. and thats cool, but winning teams at any level of competition don’t compete for anything with a selfish leader. There is a reason the Pistons, who are 11-17 this season, won’t start their highest paid player. Maybe Ben Gordon wasn’t meant to start. Well maybe Ricky Harris isn’t the type of player to start.

What does the team gain for starting Ricky? He isn’t a great defender by any stretch, and Anthony Gurley has proven that he can get his own shot and score when absolutely needed. Bringing Ricky off the bench would only make him more effective, letting Ricky wreck havoc on a tired opponent and padding his scoring average. Plus, as a 6th man, his minutes would likely stay the same.

This is never going to happen of corse, and I’m actually quite fine with it. Ricky hasn’t been terrible this year, just inconsistent. I’ve just always been weary of “senior Leadership”. It doesn’t mean much when the entire organization is trying to find itself.

I know DK is testing the waters for his players, but the current rotation is doing a disservice to every young player on the team. Currently, there are 10 players averaging more than 10 minutes a game, with another averaging 7.2, with no one averaging over 30. Kellog needs to realize that there is a difference between a deep team and a team when everyone has similar abilities. The big three of Harris, Gurley and Vinson need to be logging over 30 a game, with the emphasis on Vinson who will be the undoubted leader of this team by next year (with my hope that he takes charge as the season progresses). DK needs to decide which freshman are getting the minutes and let them learn and get experience then let the bench guys take the minutes in practice, Right now, this team looks like a sampler.

Lastly, and most enraging to me, is the insistence of putting Big City in the game so much. I get it, i really do, he is a fat black dude who seems nice and stands out in the crowd of big men. But honestly, he kills us when he is in. If we ended up losing the Memphis game, while Ricky Harris would have gotten the blame, the true goat would have been Big City. His upside does not offset the the fact he can’t hit a fucking free throw! Those misses down the stretch almost swung the game and while I know DK will throw his in again, it will be cringing every second of it.

Hopefully the momentum from the Memphis game will help us beat BC tonight

Go UMass!

Reeeeeel it in a little bit.

Alright, so as I hinted, I’m guilty of getting caught up in the moment. The Memphis win doesn’t suddenly make this team A-10 title contenders. Being on Top Plays and the Ultimate Highlight are great for the program, but the following things are still true about UMass basketball:

1) This same team has lost to Cornell at home, UCF on the road, a pair of bottom-rung Big East teams (Rutgers and Seton Hall), got positively smoked by a probably-overrated Michigan State team, and our wins include a nailbiter against Quinnipiac (!!) and one against a Division 2 team that was, for a while, closer than any D1-vs-D2 game should ever be.

2) 99 out of 100 times, we lose that game to Memphis. They’re basically in a rebuilding year, still recovering from losing Calipari, yet even that ragtag lineup of guys like Mack, Witherspoon and Henderson-Niles was clearly the more talented team; they had an awful shooting night, weren’t helped by some of the worst officials I’ve ever seen (the kind that makes mistakes on both ends but ends up getting influenced by the home crowd in the end), got outhustled by a fired-up UMass team wearing the Dr. J throwbacks, and STILL only lost on a fluke play that might never happen in a million years.

3) …wow, that last one was harsh, I think I’ll stop there.

But I reiterate, the win does some things for this team. One, it shows us what kind of potential next year holds. Terrell Vinson was an absolute STUD in this game. Gary Correia, at least in the second half, showed that he just might be able to run the point for the rest of the year and next. Ricky Harris, our best player, was pretty clearly affected by his injury and we won despite his mediocre performance, showing that his absence next year miiiight not be a huge deal (especially if Riley continues to improve when he comes back). Carter? Bailey? Starting to get back into the thick of things and give us size. Imagine this team next year with all the freshmen being juuust a little better, and with the additions of Esho and a hopefully non-anorexic Putney. Kellogg still isn’t there yet either, but he looks so much better and more comfortable coaching than he did a year ago today.

Additionally, it could, I repeat, could, be a springboard for the rest of the year. Let’s see how things go tomorrow in Boston College, where we won’t have a “home crowd” but we’ll still probably outnumber BC’s joke of a fanbase. (Sadly I won’t be able to make it, as I’m going to the Bruins game…wait, that’s not really that sad at all!) If we get smoked by the Eagles, I’ll be a lot less optimistic. If we at least look competitive in our next two (at BC and at Davidson), I think we suddenly become serious contenders in the conference. Remember, we began this season looking up at schools like La Salle and Richmond. If we can beat BC and Memphis, shouldn’t we be able to at least compete in a mid-major conference? I think so.

Meanwhile, less than a week until our boys return to the ice. I’ll get to that season recap within a few days (consider it my Christmas present to y’all). In the meantime, I’ll point you to the midseason grades for the players that Rocks has posted on Fear the Triangle. He’s pretty much spot on with them.

Also, my buddy Walsh has joined the blog, he’ll be contributing a little more sporadically than me but he brings a lot of hockey knowledge to the table. Again guys, if you wanna be a contributor, please let me know; you don’t need to write anywhere near as much as I do!

EDIT: We have two contributors now, Matt is joining the party as well. He’s more of a basketball guy but he likes hockey too, kind of a reverse Walsh. I repeat that this is first and foremost a hockey blog, but I welcome the different perspectives and I hope that, as we gain readers (i.e. hockey starts back up again, and we start spreading the word at games), more of you guys (or gals) jump on board. For now the three of us will have admin privileges, but contributors are more than welcome.
